We don't regret voting Buhari - Northern leaders
– Northern leaders said their votes were not wasted in electing President Buhari
– They said this at a summit organised by the Northern Elders Forum
– According to them, Buhari had fulfilled one of his promises, which is to improve security
Northern leaders have said they don’t regret voting President Muhammadu Buhari, despite the economic challenges in the country.
Speaking in Kaduna on Monday, October 10, at a summit organised by the Northern Elders Forum, they said Buhari had delivered on one of his promises, which was to improve security, The Punch reports.
In a keynote address, a former secretary of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, said: “Today we meet in Kaduna in a vastly-improved security atmosphere, with Boko Haram pinned to enclaves.”
The northern leaders stated that if Buhari or other northerner presents him or herself for election in 2019, they will gladly cast their votes for the individual.
“Those who are disposed to listen, please, listen; northern votes were not wasted in electing President Buhari.
“In 2019, we will also use our votes in a manner consistent with our interests as Northerners. We did not make a mistake in putting up a solid, united front as Northerners in spite of our ethno-religious differences,” Baba-Ahmed said.
However, he reminded President Buhari that there was hunger and starvation stalking millions of homes.
“Inflation is making life difficult by the day. People are losing jobs. Businesses are closing down. Infrastructure is decaying. Young Nigerians are losing hope of being employed. Our hospitals are full of people who suffer mysterious illnesses, and they cannot afford the fees,” the former INEC secretary added.
A week ago, Senator Shehu Sani had warned leaders in the north and members of the Arewa Consultative Forum against supporting Buhari blindly. He said the president should be commended where he is right and told the truth where he strays.
